What is cPanel, and do you need it?
If you've ever been sent a hosting login and landed on a page full of icons, that was probably cPanel. It's the control panel most Australian web hosts use, and it's how you look after the email, files and databases behind your website without touching the server itself.

The short answer
cPanel is a web-based control panel for a hosting account. It lets you create email addresses, upload files, manage databases, add domains, install SSL and run backups without technical server access. WHM sits above it and is used by hosts and resellers to create cPanel accounts. Most small businesses benefit from having cPanel even if their web person does most of the work.
What cPanel does
A hosting server runs Linux, a web server, a mail server and a database server. cPanel puts all of that behind one login with point-and-click tools. You don't need to know any commands. You click Email Accounts to make a mailbox, File Manager to upload a file, or Backup to download a copy of your site.
What you can do in cPanel
Create mailboxes, forwarders and autoresponders, reset passwords and open webmail.
Files
Upload, edit and back up website files through File Manager or SFTP.
Databases
Create MySQL databases and users, and manage them with phpMyAdmin.
Domains and DNS
Add addon domains and subdomains, set redirects and edit DNS records if your DNS is hosted there.
SSL
Check and install certificates. On most hosts, free certificates are issued automatically.
Apps and settings
Install WordPress, choose the PHP version, set up cron jobs and see how much space you're using.
Who this is for
- Business owners who have been given a cPanel login and aren't sure what it's for.
- Anyone comparing hosts and wondering whether cPanel matters.
- Web designers deciding between cPanel and other hosting panels.
cPanel, WHM and who uses which
- cPanel is for one account. The business or its web person uses it to manage one website's files, email and databases.
- WHM is for many accounts. Web Host Manager sits above cPanel. Hosts and resellers use it to create, resize and suspend cPanel accounts.
- The server sits underneath. Your host looks after the operating system, security patches and hardware, so you don't have to.

cPanel questions
Do I need cPanel?
You don't have to use it, but you should have access to it. It's the quickest way to reset a mailbox password, download a backup or check what's using your space, and it means you're not stuck if your web person disappears.
What's the difference between cPanel and WHM?
cPanel manages one hosting account. WHM manages the server and all the cPanel accounts on it. Resellers use WHM to create an account for each client.
Is cPanel the same as the WordPress dashboard?
No. The WordPress dashboard manages your website's pages and plugins. cPanel manages the hosting underneath: email, files, databases and domains.
What are the alternatives to cPanel?
Plesk, DirectAdmin and hosts' own custom panels do similar jobs. cPanel is the most widely used, which makes it easier to find help and to move between hosts.
