IT health check for Adelaide businesses
Most owners know roughly how their IT is set up, but not whether the backups actually restore, who still has admin access or which PCs stopped getting security updates. An IT health check answers those questions. We look over the whole setup, then give you a short report that says what's fine, what needs watching and what to fix first.

The short answer
An IT health check is a quick, structured look at a business's technology: backups and restore testing, security updates, logins and multi-factor authentication, devices, the network, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, email security and documentation. WaTo Consulting runs them for Adelaide businesses and hands back a traffic-light report with each finding ranked by risk, plus a short walkthrough so you know what to do next.
What is an IT health check?
It's a snapshot of how healthy your IT is right now, done in days rather than weeks. We check the things that cause the most trouble when they go wrong: backups that were never tested, accounts without multi-factor authentication, computers running software that no longer gets security fixes, and a network nobody has documented. It isn't a formal audit against a standard and it isn't a penetration test. It's the practical first look that tells you whether you need either of those.
What we check
Backups and recovery
What gets backed up, where it goes, how long it's kept, and whether a restore has ever been tested. We do a test restore where it's safe to.
Logins and access
Multi-factor authentication, admin accounts, shared logins, and accounts still open for people who have left.
Updates and end of life
Which PCs, servers and apps are behind on updates or past the date the vendor stopped fixing them, like Windows 10 and Office 2016.
Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace
Sign-in security, mailbox forwarding rules, external sharing, admin roles and licences nobody is using.
Network and Wi-Fi
Firewall, router and switch firmware, Wi-Fi security, guest access and the single points of failure that take the office offline.
Email security
SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your domain, spam filtering, and how exposed you are to fake invoice and payment change emails.
Devices and protection
Antivirus or endpoint protection on every machine, disk encryption on laptops, and how phones get to company email.
Documentation and suppliers
Whether passwords, network details and supplier contacts are written down somewhere safe, and which outside companies have remote access.
Who it's for
- Owners who aren't sure their IT is in good shape and want a straight answer before something breaks.
- Businesses whose IT person or provider has just left, and nobody else knows how things are set up.
- Teams about to fill in a cyber insurance renewal or a client's security questionnaire.
- Offices still running Windows 10 machines or an old server and wondering what to replace first.
- Anyone who has just had a scare, like a hacked mailbox or a backup that didn't restore.
How it works
- A short call first. We ask how many people and sites you have, what systems you rely on and what's worrying you, so the check covers what matters.
- We look at the setup. Some of it is done remotely through your Microsoft 365 or Google admin and a small scan of your PCs. Some of it needs a visit to see the network cupboard and the server.
- We rate every finding. Red means fix it now, orange means plan for it, green means it's fine. Each one comes with a plain-English reason.
- You get the report and a walkthrough. We go through it with you in person or on a call, answer questions and put the fixes in a sensible order for your budget.
- You decide what happens next. Fix things yourself, hand the list to your current provider, or ask us to quote. The report is yours either way.
Why WaTo for an IT health check
- We've been looking after Adelaide businesses' IT since 2001, so we know what usually goes wrong and where to look first.
- The report is written for owners and managers, with the technical detail kept in an appendix for whoever does the fixing.
- We tell you when something is fine. Not every finding needs money spent on it.
- You aren't locked in. Plenty of businesses use our report to brief their existing IT person or provider.
- If you want help with the fixes, the same team that did the check can do the work.
IT health check questions
How long does an IT health check take?
For a typical small office of up to about 20 people, the checking itself is usually a day or two of work spread over a week, including any site visit. Bigger or multi-site businesses take longer. We'll give you a time frame after the first call.
Will it interrupt my staff?
Hardly at all. Most of the work happens in admin portals and in the background. If we need to look at someone's PC or test a restore, we arrange a time that suits.
What does an IT health check cost?
For a typical small office of up to about 10 staff on one site, from $990 (ex GST). Bigger teams, more sites or servers take longer. Call us and we'll work out the scope together, then confirm a fixed price before we start. Our guide on IT health check costs explains what affects the price.
Is an IT health check the same as an IT audit?
No. A health check is a practical snapshot that ranks risks and fixes. An IT audit is more formal: it collects evidence and measures your setup against a named standard like the Essential Eight, which is what insurers, clients or buyers sometimes ask for.
Do I need to change IT providers to get one?
No. Many businesses ask for an independent check while keeping their current provider. We'll happily work with them on the fixes.
How often should we get one?
Once a year suits most small businesses, plus a check after any big change: a new provider, an office move, an incident, or before your cyber insurance renewal.
